Today comes news as how the show plans to handle the split between Mulder and Scully. And naturally, the person to answer such a question would be series creator/showrunner Chris Carter, who definitely had something to say on the matter. Chris Carter series creator had this to say to THR:
‘We do it in an interesting way… We play with that relationship [in the event series]. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities. It’s something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie.
When The X-Files was just its 9-season moment in time, bringing Mulder and Scully together romantically made sense in season 7, as everyone knew the end was near(ish). However, as we saw in the second feature film, there’s more drama to be had by having the two at odds.
Duchovny added more fuel to the question of Mulder and Scully’s personal relationship during a panel at Wizard World in Pittsburg recently:
“In the beginning of these six episodes, we seem to be estranged… I don’t know where it’s going. I really don’t know. I’m trying to think [what was] the end of the sixth episode …”
