The concept of a Goonies sequel has been on the hearts and minds of all those who loved the 1980’s original, which was conceived as a indiana jones style film for kids, for over three decades now.
TMZ pressed the director of the original Richard Donner for details on the Goonies sequel, and Donner also let it slip that Spielberg has concocted a new story for the project.
Ain’t it Cool News claims that The Goonies 2 is “very real” and that Donner, Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus are co-producing the film and actively looking for writers and directors. As far as the plot goes, the producers apparently want to focus on the children of the Goonies and include cameos from the original characters where possible.
Goonies 2, is still stuck in the earliest stages of development, according to Frank Marshall.
“It’s in discussion. [‘Goonies’ director Richard Donner] talked to us about it, and we’ve talked to him. It’s all about the story. We don’t just do sequels to do them. The story has to be there.”
Marshall clarified that there isn’t a Goonies 2 script “yet” and that the sequel will only happen if himself, Spielberg, and Richard Donner) feel it can truly be done in the spirit of the original film.
