Jem and the Holograms is the most recent in a string of 1980 cartoon properties reimagined into live action films by Hollywood which so far has been very financially successful, due to the smart decision of the studios to reimagined those properties which had never really been lost and had never really left the spotlight or the consciousness of their respective fan base. (G.I. Joe, Transformers) Due to consistent reincarnations of their toy line and television series.
Other 80’s cartoons reincarnation have been attempted in the last few years (Robotech, Thundercats, He-man) with varying degrees of success and failure, most of which have been either scrapped or have been stuck in developmental hell. ( for more on those on those developments check out the links above)
And then there have been the
lesser known rightly forgotten properties which seem to have been brought back to life and geared only to entertain the Justin Beiber, Katy Perry, pop culture youth audiance. Like Josie and the PussyCats, before it, now comes Jem and the holograms bought to the screen by the studio that gave us Pitch Perfect and the director of the Justin Beiber concert documentary Never say Never.
For those unfamiliar, began with an animated TV series which ran from 1985-88 and revolved around the character of Jerrica Benton, the owner and manager of a successful company Starlight Music whose alter ego is Jem – a colorful musical superstar whom Jerrica creates partially by way of a holographic computer called Synergy.
The upcoming live-action film, drops the secret identity and holographic computer (it’s only real interesting components) and instead has the her as a simple orphaned teenager (Aubrey Peeples) who finds herself on the fast track to success when a recording of her singing goes viral.
I can almost hear Justin Bebier’s lawyers being called to arms already.
Juliette Lewis (Secrets and Lies) costars while 1980s icon Molly Ringwald is Mrs. Bailey, the caretaker for Jerrica and her sisters-turned bandmates and Ryan Guzman (Pretty Little Liars) as Rio Pacheco, Jerrica’s romantic interest. You can check 0ut the trailer over at Buzzfeed
Jem and the Holograms opens in U.S. theaters on October 23rd, 2015.
